Treatment Report

DESCRIPTION

Dimensions (Primary Support):
English: 26.02” H x 36.18” L
Metric: 66.1 cm H x cm 91.9 cm L

Dimensions (Image Area):
English: 25.12” H x 34.61” L
Metric: 63.8 cm H x cm 87.9 cm L

General
This is a lithograph printed on bright white, clay-coated machine made paper.

Media

  • Yellow Printing Ink
This is a yellow printing ink. During the printing process, this ink was laid down first.
  • Cyan Printing Ink
This is a cyan printing ink. During the printing process, this ink was laid down second.
  • Magenta Printing Ink
This is a magenta printing ink. During the printing process, this ink was laid down third.
  • Black Printing Ink
This is a black printing ink. During the printing process, this ink was laid down last.
Primary Support
The support is a bright white, very smooth, medium (2), clay-coated machine-made wove paper. There is a 0.8 cm wide white border around the image area.

CONDITION

General
The presence of adhesive tape on the verso has disturbed both the media and support on the recto.

Media

  • Yellow Ink
The yellow ink is in overall good condition.
  • Cyan Ink
The cyan ink is in overall good condition.
  • Magenta Ink
The magenta ink is in overall good condition.
  • Black Ink
The black ink is in overall good condition, except in the corners of the recto, where it has been disturbed by distortion of the support.

Primary Support
On the verso, each of the four corners have a combination of clear plastic adhesive tape over a 2mm thick foam padding adhered to the support. The foam pads are 2.6 cm wide by 2.6 high. The adhesive tape is a clear, plastic-backed "packing" tape that covers the surface of the foam pads and extends onto the support in each of the corners. In addition, there are two pieces of a different kind of clear plastic adhesive tape adhered to the verso. There is a 1.6 cm long by 1.3 cm wide piece of tape at the top edge of the support, 18.4 cm from the right edge. The other piece of tape is 2.3 cm long by 1.3 cm wide, adhered 14.4 cm from the top edge and 18.2 cm from the right edge of the support.

On the recto, the corners of the support have been distorted by the tape and foam pads adhered to the verso. The ink has visible cracks and the support has abraded along the edges of the foam pads in these areas, except in the bottom left corner.

There is an adhesive residue on the recto in the bottom right quadrant of the poster. This residue covers an area that is approximately 2.5 cm long, located 4.1 cm from the right and 6.8 cm from the bottom edge of the support. This adhesive residue also extends into the letter "G" in "Overground", about 16.5 cm from the right and 25.3 cm from the bottom edge of the support. There is also a slight crease with some associated cracking of the media 20.1 cm from the bottom edge and 9.3 cm from the right edge.

Upon removal of the tape and foam pad on the top right corner of the verso, a tear in the support was discovered that was not previously visible. This tear is 2.5 cm long, and was previously held together by a piece of tape of the same type found on the top right edge and center of the verso.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Before Treatment:Digital images overall, with detail shots of each corner, of the recto and verso, in raking and ambient light.

TREATMENT PROPOSAL

  1. Remove adhesive tape and residue from verso, using a mechanical method as much as possible.
  2. Humidify and flatten between felts so as not to disturb the raised quality of the printing.
  3. Mend tears and areas of delamination using wheat starch paste and Japanese tissue as necessary.

TREATMENT PERFORMED

Completed in 2008.
