Treatment Report
CONDITION AND DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Description: Binding and Textblock
This is a case binding covered with a green bookcloth, with the title stamped in gold on the front board and spine. The textblock is a thick, machine-made pulpy white paper. The text has been printed with black printer's ink and there is no type impression. There is a binder's ticket that reads "Fogarty's, Port Elizabeth" on the back pastedown.

Condition: Binding and Textblock
The binding is in overall good condition. There is some discoloration on the both the front and back pastedowns and fly-leaves, and foxing throughout. The sewing is intact. There is minor abrasion on the corners of the case and at the head and tail of the spine.

Description: Dustjacket
The dustjacket is a highly-calendared machine-made cream-colored paper that has been printed with a black printer's ink.

Condition: Dustjacket
The dustjacket is in overall poor condition as a result of previous repair attempts, dirt and damage to the edges overall. Two 3.9cm wide pieces of masking tape are adhered to the spine at the head, on both the front and back. They are adhered both to the support and to each other. On the front of the dustjacket, 2 cm from the bottom edge of the masking tape, there is staining from another piece of tape that is no longer present. There is a piece of cellophane tape adhered to the bottom right corner on the back side of the dustjacket. Staining from the cellophane tape has penetrated through to the other side of the support. The front short flap of the dustjacket is detached. There are multiple tears and losses along the fold for the back flap, but the back flap of the dustjacket is still attached. The dustjacket overall is quite dirty, especially on the spine and edges. There is a large loss from the spine at the head, approximately 6 cm high and 4.5 cm wide, that is partially covered by the masking tape. There is a smaller loss from the spine at the tail, approximately 1.25 cm high by 4.5 cm wide. There are numerous smaller losses along all edges of the dustjacket.

TESTING

On initial testing, the ink was believed to be insoluble in ethanol; however, in the course of treatment, tidelines did appear when ethanol was utilized in removing the tape, and other solvents were tested. Acetone and toluene did not solubilize the ink.

TREATMENT PROPOSAL
  1. Remove tape mechanically, assisted by heat as necessary.
  2. Reduce staining from tape adhesive.
  3. Wash and line using Japanese tissue and wheat-starch paste.

TREATMENT PERFORMED
  1. A light surface-cleaning of the verso and recto surfaces was done with a soot sponge.
  2. A warmed microspatula was used to remove the tape carrier from the recto and part of the verso. Ethanol was introduced using a small brush to facilitate the removal of the tape from the back panel of the dustjacket.
  3. On the front panel, removal of the tape on the recto was attempted first using ethanol, at which point some tide-lines appeared on the verso side. At this point only a warm microspatula was used to remove of the tape from the verso.
  4. Ethanol, acetone and toluene were used in succession to remove the tidelines and to reduce the adhesive stain in the front bottom right corner.
  5. The dustjacket was wetted up with a spray of ethanol, then washed in a bath of H20 alkalinized with calcium carbonate for 40 minutes.
  6. A lining of Japanese kitikata paper was applied with wheat-starch paste, and then the object was dried between blotters and boards. During the lining process, the detached front flap was re-adhered to the rest of the dustjacket.
  7. Pastels were used to tone the lining paper.
  8. The dustjacket was refolded around the book.

  9. Reinforcing strips of colored kozo tissue were applied with wheat starch paste to the fore- edge of the dustjacket where it was apparent that there was risk of loss.
  10. A plastic, removable Colibri cover was placed around the dustjacket and book.
