Treatment Report

DESCRIPTION

Dimensions (Primary Support)
English: 20.1 in W x 33.3 in H
Metric: 51.1 cm W x 84.5 cm H

General
This is a screenprint of black and cream-colored ink on brown kraft paper.

Media

Primary Support
The support is a brown, moderately textured (I), moderately thick machine-made wove Kraft paper. On the verso, there is a plastic and ink accretion with some surrounding tears and fiber damage that was original to the object at the time of acquisition and therefore not part of the object’s condition.

CONDITION

General
The support is cockled and curling, and there is adhesive tape applied to three of the corners on the verso.

Media

Primary Support
The support is cockled and has curled at the top and bottom. On the verso, pressure-sensitive masking tape has been applied in the top left, bottom right and bottom left corners. The tape was applied over a smaller square of a plastic adhesive bandage. There are pin-holes in all four corners. There is also an adhesive residue with staining in two places along the bottom of the verso. The first residue is located 23.3 cm from the right edge, along the bottom edge of the support. The second residue is located 22.9 cm from the right edge and 12.5 cm from the bottom edge, with some abrasion to the paper fibers just below the residue.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Before Treatment: Digital images in raking and ambient light, of the recto and verso overall. Detail shots of each corner on the verso in raking and ambient light.

TESTING

Testing of Black Printing Ink

Protocol
A moist piece of chromatography paper was placed with medium pressure over the ink for about 10 seconds. The chromatography paper was then checked for any offset.
Results
There was no offset.

Testing of Cream Printing Ink

Protocol
A moist piece of chromatography paper was placed with medium pressure over the ink for about 10 seconds. The chromatography paper was then checked for any offset.
Results
There was no offset.

TREATMENT PROPOSAL

  1. Remove adhesive tape and residue from verso.
  2. Humidify and flatten between felts so as not to disturb the raised quality of the printing.

TREATMENT PERFORMED

  1. Using a heated microspatula, the tape carrier was removed mechanically on all three corners that had tape attached.
  2. Alpha Cellulose powder was applied to the very tacky adhesive residue in order to facilitate removal with a crepe eraser.
  3. A crepe eraser was used to mechnically remove any remaining tape adhesive residue. [See Photo]
  4. Because of the nature of the paper support and the thickly applied printing inks, it was decided not to proceed with humidification. The poster has already flattened considerably after being under weight and will continue to do so over time as a result of being housed flat instead of being rolled.
