Primary Support

CONDITION

General
The support is curling.  There is an adhesive putty adhered to the verso at the corners.  The verso corners also have areas of delamination and loss.

Primary Support
Overall, the recto is in good condition except for some mild dust accumulation.  On the verso, a blue adhesive putty is present on all four corner tips.  The putty is still tacky to the touch. There is a small separate piece of putty adhered about 28.6 cm from the top edge and 4.6 cm from the right edge on the verso.  There are also areas where the support was delaminated in the corners. In the bottom right corner there is a delaminated flap of the support that measures approximately 4.2 cm wide by 3.4 cm long.  In the bottom left corner, the support has been delaminated almost to the media layer; this area of loss measures approximately 5.5 cm wide by 2 cm long.  There is a similar delaminated spot in the top left corner that is 2.6 cm wide by 2.4 cm long.  In the top right corner, there is a delaminated area with an accompanying attached flap of the support, approximately 2.8 cm wide by 1.8 cm long.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Before Treatment: Digital images overall and close-ups of the corners in both raking and ambient light.

TREATMENT PROPOSAL

  1. Remove the adhesive putty using a solvent-assisted mechanical method.
  2. Humidify and flatten the painting between felts.
  3. Mend and fill delaminated areas on verso using wheat starch paste and Japanese tissue.

Possible Effects of Treatment
The putty may not react to solvents, preventing its full removal.  The solvents may penetrate the support and affect the media on the recto.

TREATMENT PERFORMED

Completed in 2007.
